Indian Govt Announces Internship for Youth with INR 5000 Monthly Allowance in Top Companies

Union Finance Minister introduced an internship scheme to provide opportunities to 1 crore youth in the top 500 companies in five years. It offers 12 months of real-time business environment exposure to the candidates with an allowance of INR 5000 per month.

Companies are expected to bear the training cost and 10% of the internship cost from their CSR funds.

Further for skilling of youths to generate employment opportunities, Nirmala Sitharaman proposed INR 1.48 crore to skill 20 lakh youth over the next five years.

She mentioned that 1,000 industrial training institutes will be upgraded.

Source: India Budget

Speaking on Union Budget 2024-25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “In this Budget, the government has announced ‘Employment Linked Incentive scheme. This will help generate many employment opportunities.”

“Under this scheme, the government will give the first salary to those who are newly entering the workforce. Youth from villages will be able to work in the country’s top companies under the apprenticeship program.”

India’s Youth Unemployment

According to the India Employment Report 2024, 83% of unemployed Indians are youth. Despite a surge in higher education enrollments, the quality of education remains a significant concern.

Critics argue that outdated curricula in Indian colleges fail to meet industry requirements, creating a big gap between what students learn and the skills they need for the job market.

Back in 2015, esteemed scientist and Bharat Ratna awardee CNR Rao stated that 90% of Indian universities have outdated curricula, contributing to the country’s absence from the top 100 global universities list.

Constantly researching the latest data science technology, collaborating with peers on various open-source projects and attending conferences are some ways to stay relevant in the field.

The post My internship played a big role in my career – Senior Data Scientist at Amazon, Naveed Ahmed Janvekar appeared first on AIM.

]]>

Naveed Ahmed Janvekar has started his career as an engineer at Fidelity investments and has risen to a senior data scientist at Amazon. He has worked with technical teams across industries specialising in early detection of abuse, active learning and social networks. Naveed’s professional journey consists of conducting data science research, speaking at summits and publishing data-science articles on various platforms.

Analytics India Magazine got in touch with Naveed to discuss his data science journey, the fraud prevention space and the must-haves to make it in the industry.

From Fidelity Investments to Amazon data science

Couple of my colleagues at Fidelity Investments were working with data and providing insights for the business. I have developed an inclination towards data when I started to keep a tab on my monthly spending by analysing my transactions. The ability to present raw data into meaningful information led me to pursue data science.

I have decided to get the necessary education to pursue a career in data science and enrolled at The University of Texas at Dallas for a Master’s in Information Science in Data Science. During my Master’s, I interned at Nanigans, an ad-tech startup in Boston. After my graduation, I worked at KPMG, and in 2017 I got an opportunity to work at Amazon in the fraud and abuse prevention team.

Fraud prevention at Amazon

Currently, I work at Amazon as a Senior Data Scientist in the Abuse Prevention team, where I am responsible for implementing machine learning based solutions to detect and prevent any policy-violating entity on the platform. I have been spending a significant amount of time in research and inventions to efficiently use data science/machine learning in abuse detection. Apart from technical work, I spend time working with product managers, software developers, and senior leadership on my organisation’s data science/machine learning vision.

In general, the fraud and abuse prevention space is evolving, which means bad actors constantly try multiple ways to trick or gain access to the platform to commit policy-violating behaviour. Common fraud types that exist across the industry are stolen credit card fraud and account takeovers. In both types, phishing is the common mode attack.

In addition, organisations sometimes must deal with chargeback issues to compensate the victims of credit card fraud. Companies can use data available at the account level at the time of fraud or account takeover to model fraud to predict future risk. Techniques as simple as maintaining a blacklist of stolen credit cards or suspicious IP addresses are also effective in combating such issues in the short term. While organisations can implement sophisticated machine learning models to prevent and detect such attacks – the timing of detection becomes crucial; hence companies can emphasise early detection of such attacks so that the business impact or customer impact is minimised.

Right data science project

The biggest challenge is to get the right kind of projects in the data science field with measurable impact. As data professionals, we can work on many projects, but what makes you really stand out is the value that can be generated or the impact it can have on your customers. I have always prioritised projects that created significant business impact and a positive customer experience in my career. Before starting any data science/machine learning project, I spend significant time scoping out a problem statement and measuring its estimated impact for my company or customers.

Internship

My internship played a big role in my career and gave me the opportunity to work on large datasets and generate insights. Many times, the datasets we work with at school or universities can be clean, but in the real world, datasets can get really messy. During my internship, I experienced challenges in getting the right datasets, munging them, and building a narrative around my findings. As part of my internship, I have published articles such as Facebook Relevance Score: The Magic Number and Facebook Relevance Score: 3 Tactics to Boost Your Ad Effectiveness. The publications were a result of my work on using regression analysis on ad spend optimisation.

Must-have skills

Given the wide scope of a data scientist, a lot of importance is given to being a generalist. But having good scientific understanding of algorithms and the math behind them will give you an edge. Python knowledge, A/B testing skills, metrics development, being able to collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders are super important. Storytelling, building a narrative around your projects, having good product intuition, being able to communicate insights, are also critical.

Constantly researching the latest data science technology, collaborating with peers on various open-source projects and attending conferences are some ways to stay relevant in the field.

How To Bag That ML Internship https://analyticsindiamag.com/ai-origins-evolution/how-to-bag-that-ml-internship/ Sun, 17 Oct 2021 07:30:00 +0000 https://analyticsindiamag.com/?p=10051692

Tips that will help you stay ahead in bagging ML internships

The post How To Bag That ML Internship appeared first on AIM.

]]>

Machine learning is not just a buzzword anymore. It is very much a reality in today’s businesses. There is a huge craze among students and professionals to enter this exciting field, and a stepping stone to that would be an internship – that would give a real-world experience on deploying algorithms to solve business problems.

But how does one go about bagging a machine learning internship? With so much demand to enter this field, the competition to bag these coveted internships is cut-throat. How does one stay ahead in the game to land the internship that could be a stepping stone to their ML careers?

We have you covered. Listed down are some ways to get that ML internship you have been eyeing:

Be Solid In Your Concepts

While interning will expose you to a variety of skills and methods, even to bag an ML internship, one needs to come with good mathematical and statistical understanding, programming and business problem-solving skills. Even if you have not worked on ML techniques before, you need not worry. Having a strong base in SQL, R, Python and domain knowledge at your fingertips will make your internship experience smooth.

Priyabrata Mishra, who has used ML techniques at one of his internships

and is currently pursuing an integrated MSc in Mathematics and Computing at BIT Mesra, says, “As an ML internship is all about data, the candidate should be able to play with the given dataset and get to the conclusion based on the problem statement. I think the first and foremost thing needed is basic statistics. Along with it, the candidate should also have knowledge of basic linear algebra, optimization techniques, and a few machine learning Algorithms.

“To handle data, knowledge in one of the programming languages is also needed. At the present time, Python and R are the most used languages in the ML domain, but it depends on the company or the team. DBMS concepts and SQL are good to have. It’s not always required, but in a few instances, the intern might have to pull some required data from the company or client database”, Mishra adds.

Flaunt your projects

If you have worked on independent ML projects on Kaggle and other platforms and can showcase them at sites like GitHub, that will surely catch the attention of the recruiter. Successful projects conducted out of work or educational curriculum shows enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. This makes the recruiting company see potential in you as they think you will go that extra mile to learn if you intern at their place.

Network as much as you can

Networking can be a key to land ML internships. One should look for machine learning seminars, events, and campus programs to connect with leaders already working in this field. While networking with the leaders, try to understand the particular area of machine learning they work on and see if that area excites you and motivates you to work too. Do not blindly apply to ML internships that do not cater to your career path.

Elman Mansimov, an Applied Scientist at Amazon Web Services, resonated with this idea in a recent tweet. He asked aspirants to work on identifying people whose work they admire and want to work with. He said, “You should already have a rough list of people in mind based on your interests. Many folks in ML I cold-emailed were all friendly and got back to me at some point.”

Startups or Big Companies? Be Open-Minded

While big names might seem desirable for many, sometimes, startups can provide a steeper learning curve. While it is perfectly fine to intern at either of the two if you get to work in an area of your choice, bigger names might require advanced degrees to just apply. Startups might have a slightly lower entry barrier in terms of educational qualifications but can accelerate the learning process.

Dipyaman Sanyal, who runs Dono Consulting, a boutique quantitative analytics and financial modelling firm, says, “I might be biased since I run a small firm, but I’d strongly recommend interning at a small firm with the right kind of focus. Our interns work on projects that 3rd-4th year analysts in bigger firms won’t have access to. It also gives you a complete end-to-end picture and access to leaders who have seen quite a bit. However, you must have the mindset to learn and juggle to be a part of a smaller firm. It’s not easy if you have a mindset of just ‘doing your job’.”

Don’t Oversell Yourself

Often, we try to overpitch ourselves while applying for an internship or a job. If you have not worked on a particular ML technique or you do not have knowledge about a particular statistical concept, be honest about it. The hiring managers at the companies and startups can easily detect whether you are actually skilled at a particular technique you are boasting about or not.

Once you get that ML internship, the goal should be to convert that into a full-time role. Venkat Raman of Aryma Labs says that one can increase the odds of converting the internship by demonstrating that one is a quick learner and by being inquisitive. He adds, “Make some significant contribution in the project that results in some tangible results for the company.”

With competition in the ML space growing every day, along with the listed tips, the intense desire to learn each day is a must to survive in this field. Data science, ML, AI and other emerging technologies are evolving every day. One has to keep themselves constantly updated with these changes to stay in this field for the long haul.

Studies suggest that the business analytics market is expected to reach USD 103.65 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 7.3%, of which the US has the largest market. Given the huge market outreach, it also has some of the best education and training in advanced analytics, including business analytics. With the ever-increasing data, business analytics has become one of the critical facets and an essential function of the data science teams in organisations. It involves gathering, analysing and drawing valuable conclusions from the vast amount of data to find a utility in a variety of use cases.

Business analytics postgraduate programmes in the US focus on covering the various aspects mentioned above, from data modelling to programming and more. Not only do these programmes offer an opportunity to learn the latest skills and trends in the field in the most cohesive way but also provide an opportunity to interact with students from all over the world, and also work on a lot of different projects. They also have one of the best ROIs.

Internship Opportunity While Studying Business Analytics

Not just in program structure but the fact that the US provides one of the best internship opportunities in business analytics, makes it a favourable destination for pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Analytics. A recent research paper also suggested that employers are more likely to respond to applicants with internship experience in their resume than those who don’t. Getting an internship helps to get hands-on exposure to the tools learnt during the program curriculum but also get relevant experience to deal with real world business problems.

The Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) program by the University of Louisville (UofL) is one such program that offers the opportunity to get paid through an internship while earning the degree in the US. The university provides competitive paid internship opportunities for qualified candidates thus making this program very unique.

The 13-month MSBA program, which is STEM-designated and is SAS-certified, lets the candidate earn analytical expertise and gain real-world business solutions, providing an excellent opportunity for candidates to tap into the rapidly growing need for analytics experts.

The program is designed to accelerate the learnings of a candidate so that they can build high-level expertise, to a level that it transforms them into an expert and go-to leader for strategic insights in the organisation. That is not all; the international students are eligible for up to three years of post-completion work authorisation in the USA.

“As I moved to the US after my marriage, I was looking to study further and add new skills into my resume. After some research, I found this course by UofL, which turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. One of the best features of the program is the internship opportunity, which the school goes above and beyond to help you secure one. I bagged an internship opportunity with Appriss in just three months after joining the program,” shared Shruti Bandewar, a student of the MSBA program at UofL.

She further added that this internship in the healthcare sector provided her with the much-needed exposure to the US work culture. It also helped widen the implementation of SQL and tools like Tableau, Power BI and SAS in her work.

Industry Partnership

The program has top companies as its industry partners to help fine-tune their curriculum as per the current industry standards and this helps the students of the MSBA program grab internships and job opportunities with them. As UofL notes, the industry partner supports them by:

  • Hiring students for lengthy internships.
  • Hiring graduates to fill permanent positions in the business analytics domain.
  • Providing business-market insights to help us maintain a relevant curriculum that meets industry needs.

There are many Fortune 500 and 100 companies that have partnered with UofL to ensure that a healthy workforce in analytics is created. Some of these companies include Accentf(x) Marketing, Brown-Forman, ConDati, Edj Analytics, GE, KFC Yum!, among others.

Praveena Vutchula, an international student with the MSBA program, shared that this was her first international experience and had several questions at various stages of the application process. “The MSBA program’s team has been so patient and prompt in responding to all my questions,” said Praveena who had worked for a tech company in India before joining the MSBA program.

Talking about the internship, Praveena said that with a series of interviews for about four weeks, she ended up with four offers in-hand from both startups and multinational companies in various industries. She chose to work with El Toro, which is a fast-growing tech startup in the digital advertising industry. “This would not have been possible without the help and support from the Internship coordination team,” shared Praveena.

The internship opportunity as data analyst provided hands-on experience in technologies like Python, Power BI and SQL, which were taught in the program. “It gave me the potential to learn real business insights and understand how technology works for digital advertising. I also understood the working on MongoDB, Postgres DB, Power BI, Python coding, web scraping, Airflow, Kubernetes, and Docker during my internship,” shared Praveena.

UofL is also a proud member of the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Consortium (ACCAC), a consortium that provides a vehicle for inter-institutional academic and administrative collaboration between 15 member universities.

Program Highlights

With expert faculty members and one of the best learning environments on campus, the University of Louisville has facilities such as technology-enhanced media and wireless access in classrooms, among others. The 13-month program is a team-based structure that creates a rich and diverse learning environment. It provides an opportunity for students to work both in teams and independently to complete the coursework.

The MSBA curriculum covers areas such as data modelling, analytics with business acumen and impactful communications to develop the skills necessary to become a successful business analyst. The program is designed and delivered in collaboration with local businesses to provide a practical business orientation, increasing the skill relevance in the professional marketplace.

Talking about the course structure, Praveena shared that the program is comprehensive yet intense. There is a lot of practical learning with coding and challenging tasks. It covers new technologies and real-life scenarios for handling data in business. She further added that while the program is competitive, it is not stressful. “All the professors who taught our program were very supportive. They are available on email most of the time and very prompt in responding to queries,” she said.

It is interesting to note that all the classes are taught by PhD level faculty who are extensively published and experienced in relevant areas.

Some of the features of the MSBA program are:

  • No GMAT is required to enrol for the program
  • It covers tools such as Python, R, SAS, SAS Enterprise Miner, Tableau
  • A STEM-designated program that provides additional benefits for international students
  • Covers skills and techniques such as data mining, data modelling, data visualisation, discrete choice modelling, machine learning, prediction algorithms, programming, statistical analysis, textual analysis, web scraping
  • Covers tools such as Python, R, SAS, SAS Enterprise Miner, Tableau
  • Provides competitive paid internship to those who qualify
  • Work with real-world company data and projects to solve real business issues through a capstone consulting project
  • Personalised communication coaching to support your success
  • Interact with corporate speakers and network with influential employers and experts
  • On-campus program in state-of-the-art facilities
  • Professional career coaching with Lifetime Career Support Promise

As Shruti shares, some of the major takeaways from the MSBA program at UofL have been the internship opportunity from day one, industry alignment of the courses, industry-affiliated capstone project and the overall cohort structure. “SAS Certification and IBM Watson Certification are an added advantage,” she said on a concluding note.

data science internship

Data science internships provide opportunities to learn from the pros, gain practical experience and build a strong professional network. But, getting a data science internship is not straightforward, you need to showcase your expertise and enthusiasm to work for the company. Firstly, one would require a strong foundation of data science concepts. Then the next step would be to build projects starting with the simpler ones to the ones that have real-world use cases. These add value to your overall skills and take you a step closer in your data science journey.

It takes a lot of work, from basics like creating a resume and LinkedIn profile to posting them on job boards, a lot of effort goes into it. Some of the tips which are essential to get a better data science internship are listed below. (Keep in mind, basic steps like preparing a strong resume and cover letter are something that is important too).

Solidify Knowledge

Getting an internship is similar to getting a job. No matter which one it is, one has to be proficient in the basics of data science concepts that are a must-have — statistics, programming languages like Python or R are essential for any data scientist.

One can take up online resources that can prove to be more flexible or opt for offline classes. Also, one needs to follow sites like AIM, KDNuggets, and Kaggle, to stay updated with everything that’s going on in the data science community.

Soft Skills

One of the crucial things recruiters will look at while hiring a data science intern is soft skills. These include strong written and verbal communication skills. Soft skills help interns to develop a relationship with stakeholders for the company’s betterment. Besides, it will assist you while collaborating with different departments of an organisation. Data scientists are expected to share ideas, insights, and criticism to successfully communicate their results. In a large company, one needs to have soft skills to successfully collaborate with stakeholders.

Research

One of the most advisable courses of action for your data science strategy for landing a better internship would be by making a list of companies that you would be interested in. This list can be based on the industry, culture, location and brand appeal. It’s important to know about these factors when it comes to selecting these companies. When you have successfully made a list, then its time to understand what they are looking for and how well you can contribute to that company. Once you have the list, look at the skills required for these companies. This will help you streamline your options and possibly help you choose the right internship.

Building An Attractive Portfolio

Building a strong portfolio doesn’t only involve working on projects and displaying them on your resume. Part of building a portfolio can also involve blogging or showcasing projects on platforms like Kaggle or GitHub. Besides, try to contribute on StackOverflow to gain reputations as it will communicate the expertise you have in the data science techniques. You can also participate in MachineHack to test your skill against other data science enthusiasts and learn in the process. Participation is key for aspirants than winning a hackathon. This demonstrates your enthusiasm and interest to thrive in the competitive industry.

Finding A Mentor

To thrive in a competitive landscape, you need to adopt best practices, which you can get from mentors. Good guidance from data science leaders can help you in devising a perfect strategy to obtain an internship. You can register here to get your questions answered from prominent data scientists. Mentors can not only show you the right path but also motivate you to keep going in the competitive data science space.

Internship Search

After you have taken care of the basics that involve making an attractive resume and cover letter, the next step is to put this information on a job board, particularly the ones that are related to data science. Some of the recommended job boards and places you can search for internships are: Internshala, Github, AngelList, Kaggle Jobs, Analytics India Magazine, LinkedIn.

With Data Science being an attractive field, students look for internship opportunities. An internship for college students provides them a big advantage to bolster their CV strong and land a job in data science. College students or newcomers in the field often lack guidance and need tips to bag their first data science internship.

We list some tips for the beginners in data science to grab their first ever data science internship.

1.Know the company:

Before applying, make sure that you study all about what the company does and what its goals are. Research a little to know about the company, its products and services and make sure that the job they are offering is the job that interests you. Applying for an internship without knowing the organisation well could be very negative when asked about the company during the interview.

2.Know your ML fundamentals and don’t stuff up resume with keywords:

At the end of the day, it is a machine learning internship and recruiters are looking for some basic level of expertise in machine learning. You are of course not expected to be an expert with all the deep technical understanding. But before you go for the interview, make sure you have mastered at least one of the basic algorithms and are at least to a good level awareness of the introductory machine learning algorithms like linear regression, K means, SVMs, random forest.

3.Active GitHub account:

A GitHub account definitely enhances the chances of landing an internship in data science or machine learning. The account must be active and have useful content. It is a clear proof to the people in the interview panel that you have knowledge and leaves behind a great deal of a good impression.

4.Data science blogs:

Probably not as impactful as a GitHub account or a project done by you, but an own technical blog on data science depicting your knowledge will add to your positives giving the organisation an impression that you are truly interested in data science and. Although this is not a necessity, it is sure a plus.

5.Do ML and DS projects:

Machine learning courses that you had taken up online and academics that you are involved in are the things that all the candidates applying for the interview will have. But what not everyone has is a practical machine learning project. Recruiters are looking for not just good coding and machine learning skills, but also problem-solving skills. Projects show that you have applied the theoretical knowledge that you have learnt into practical applications, which is in turn a proof of you being able to handle real-time organisation issues and goals.

If you cannot come up with a project yourself, do it under a professor under your college or participate in online hackathons are online competitions. It is also important to showcase how you function in a team. Working in an organisation requires collaborating with different people and it is important to show that you can work in a group and offer value to the team.

7.Don’t overcrowd your CV:

Don’t fill your resume with all the popular programming languages that you know and don’t claim that you know all those popular machine learning algorithms. Specially since you are joining an internship as a fresher, there is no way that you could’ve mastered every programming language that there is. Proactive and eager-to-learn attitude is what will get applicants noticed, even if one might not have an extensive portfolio or industry experience. Familiarity with every aspect, or an extensive experience in the industry is not necessary, but it is important for recruiters know that you are up for taking up a research and work towards the goal.

Ms Veronica Puah, Deputy Director of Talent Networking at SGInnovate said in a panel discussion, “It’s OK if you don’t know or are not too familiar with certain things. But at the end of the day, we want someone who takes the initiative to do their own research to close the gap.” Make sure that the project that you are presenting, if you are, has everything that you know so that you can answer any level of technical questions restricted to that area and slay the interview. Be ready to answer questions related to anything that is mentioned in your CV because interviewers pay special attention to that. Revise all the theory related to the projects and courses that you had done, before the interview day.

Can popular massive open online courses turn into job offers? This a common dilemma faced in data science forums about internships and certificate courses converting in job offers. Now that you snagged an internship, built a portfolio of work, networked with the mid and senior management team and are ready to pursue a career in data science, you are waiting for the high-paying job offer to land in your inbox. According to UC Berkeley data scientist Karsten Walker, recruiters look for specific traits such as applying scientific methodology to a business problem and look for candidates who have a demonstrated history of applying analytical concepts. Breaking into the data science industry is tough as it is, and data science newbies face intense competition in the search for jobs after internships. However, getting an internship means getting one foot inside the door and applying classroom learning to real world business problems.

Another upside of the internship is that most organisations who look for interns, do it from an opportunistic point of view wherein interns can be converted into full-time hires. It is an informal way of recruitment and also helps in minimising the hiring cost to the company.

How Can One Maximise Their Internship Experience And Convert It Into A Job Offer:

  • Talk about the opportunity given to work on all types of projects, including the ability to work with unstructured data and writing scripts to scrape websites
  • Talk about the responsibility given as an intern and how the work delivered created value
  • Stress about the experience of working alongside data scientists to productionize models and testing different algorithms
  • Stress about the importance of your technical credentials with respect to the impact on business and general IT skills
  • Emphasise on how hiring a senior professional could take six months and can be an expensive process, in the meantime, critical requirements can be filled with an entry level candidate

Note to Recruiters: Here’s Why You Should Hire Entry Level Professionals

Vin Vashishta, data science and machine learning strategist recently observed via LinkedIn that most organisations who look for PhD-level candidates usually end up using basic techniques like regression and decision trees for structured data. For these jobs, coding skills required are minimum and the result is often a report or visualisation. Vashishta poses a relevant question —  why are we still asking for a Master’s or PhD with over three years of experience for an entry level position? Data science interns usually demonstrate an eager learning ability most sought after by recruiters and startup founders who are keen on seeing the passion behind the project. Vashishta strongly urges organisations and businesses to hire more entry level talent instead of leaning towards mere bigger degree holders for their data science needs. He believes organisations should be more open to hire an aspiring data scientist with a BS/Certification/Online Program and one or two years’ experience in development or analytics.

Vashishta’s thoughts on entry level professionals are, “You’re going to be amazed by the value they return in terms of hiring costs and ability they bring to the table to grow with the business needs.”

Given how data science is becoming more business-centric and is being leveraged across domains, it will be helpful for entry-level professionals to build skills in both tech side such as engineering, systems engineering and web programming and also beef up learnings about the business domain such as presentation skills, working in big teams, cross-functional stakeholder management. This can only be gained on the job, so try being as participative in the internship experience as you can. All these soft skills fall in the data science job cluster and add value to business.

Tips For Data Science Interview

For tips on cracking the dreaded data science job interview, Vashishta points out in a blog post that it comes to two things — potential and goal. He explains that the employers ask if the candidate must be self-motivated and does the he/she have a reasonable plan to achieve their goals. He writes that applicants should spend some time understanding their minutes professional motivations and what drives you as a person or sets you apart from others.

One must make sure to emphasise how the role fits into their career progression and how the company can help in achieving the career goals. Besides skill, recruiters look for skills such as machine learning and how it will shape your work can leave a strong impression on the recruiting team. Tier I leadership management looks for vision and strategy and how it can be tied to business outcomes, build new products and meet demands, so sharing your vision with senior management can help clinch the job.
